Chapter 56: Medic!

The sound of barking dogs reached Matt through the kitchen window. He put down the newspaper, got up, and peered outside. A bus was accelerating slowly past their gate.

"What is it, Dad?" asked Julio, not taking his eyes off the computer monitor.

"A bus. The dogs don't normally bark at a bus, but it probably stopped for that crew fixing potholes on the highway. I bet they were shouting back and forth and that set them off. I guess we don't have to worry about being attacked by buses or county road men."

He went back to his paper.

In her shop in the barn, Clio barely registered the dogs, but a few minutes later when Raisin slunk to the door and hissed a warning, she noticed.

"What is it, girl?"

She peeked out. The cat was staring not toward the highway but toward the back of the compound at the double-wide wrought iron gate her dad and Julio had rebuilt, her ears adjusting like fire control antennas. Clio looked more closely. Was that a hand gripping a bar of the pass-through gate? She could make out the hand was connected to an arm...and to a shoulder. The top of a head was resting against the gate. She stepped outside and Raisin hissed again.

Halfway there she could tell it wasn't a man; it was a smaller person. It was...it was Harry!

"Harry! What are you doing here?"

When he looked up she stopped in her tracks. One of his eyes was swollen shut. There was a bruise on his forehead. He held a bloody handkerchief to his mouth.

"Oh, Harry! What happened to you?"

She undid the lock and let him in. He was limping. His jeans were dirty. One knee was torn.

"I need some repairs," he said, shakily.

She supported him by one elbow and guided him into her shop. He collapsed into a chair.

"Oh, me! Harry! You're a mess! Is anything broken? What happened?"

"I don't think so. I was on my way to work, but they caught me before I could get on the bus."

"You mean those guys who wanted you to join their gang?"

"Yeah. Four of them. They worked me over. I thought maybe you could fix me up."

"You need a doctor, Harry!"

"No. No doctor. We can't afford it. And then the cops would come. That would just make it worse. Do you still have that stuff you put on my cut?"

"You need more than that! Oh, poor Harry."

Her nursing experience had been mostly with dogs and cats and the occasional horse, but she had to do something. She pulled out a box of freshly-laundered cloths she used for processing her herbs and a bottle of hydrogen peroxide and started blotting and wiping his abrasions and applying the antiseptic ointment she’d used on him previously. She couldn't do much for his swollen eye or his cut lip. Fortunately, her dad had given her and Julio a first aid kit which included a box of band aids of various sizes. The big square ones were perfect.

"Do you have any puncture wounds, like from a knife?"

"No.
